adventures in apparel design

There is a new menswear store opening up not far from where I'm living right now that was looking for artists to collaborate with for their opening and the owner liked my work! Apparently the theme is "Ravenous: The Animal in Man" so I came up with something that I thought worked and have been playing around with it to make it appropriate for a t-shirt design. These are the comps I have so far:

scupltris is fun!

I've been messing around with scupltris at my internship, and it's a lot of fun to play with. Although now I really want zbrush...

work from my editorial class

I took an editorial illustration/design class this quarter that was both fun, informative, and occasionally incredibly frustrating. We never really did many collaborative projects in my major, so working with designers for this class was definitely a change of pace. Oddly enough, working with another person actually made me want to work harder than I usually do because I didn't want to let them down. We ended up doing a total of three projects for the class (which is more work than it sounds, we had to write the articles as well as illustrate and design them), and they're below:

This is a collaboration I did with Matty Brownell. We wrote an article about how kawaii culture and an obsession with cute things is taking over traditional Japanese culture. It was very interesting to research, especially the psychological aspect of it all. The concept behind my illustration is that a traditional style samurai symbolizing traditional Japanese culture is being smothered by kawaii style animals and objects.

This piece was done in collaboration with Jess Crawford. We discovered that we both love dancing and decided to do our project on the many benefits of dance. I wanted my illustration to convey movement and healing through dance and Jess wanted to make sure our layout was airy and utilized white space, and together this is what we came up with.

I worked with Kristin Duhaime on this editorial, we wanted to do a pulpy horror movie/comic style illustration and design to go with our article on pink slime and processed foods. I wrote the article, and the research for it was gross enough for me to reconsider my eating habits, so I wanted to make sure my illustration had an aspect of gross-ness to it.

Overall I learned a lot from this class, I only wish I had had more time to work on these projects.

figure drawing

I haven't done figure drawing in ages, so I crashed my friend's class and worked some drawing muscles that haven't been used in a while

The top two were 15 minute poses and the last one was an hour pose. I would have liked to do more but I had to get back to classwork...

Personal Branding! (aka the most terrifying process ever)

My business and marketing for illustration class forced me to finish up my attempts at personal branding. Despite not really knowing what I was doing I really like what I've come up with so far. I've been told it's very "me" which is exactly what I was hoping for.

Next step... finishing my website. Coding will be the death of me.
