Herman!

Herman is a vision impaired alien who goes through a lot of contacts. I came up with him while doing the 30 day character challenge and I really like how he turned out so I wanted to put him up on this blog as well.

Conundrum

I have been working and reworking on this portrait for a while now, but I always end up ruining it in one way or another. This progress shot is my favorite version of it so far, but I need to actually finish it.

This is based on an article about a solar powered ship circumnavigating the Earth. The boat still needs a lot of work, but I'm happy with everything else.

I've been playing around with simpler designs as of late. I'm really liking how this turned out, but the placement of "cheers" probably wouldn't actually work in print so I might move it at some point.

I've been playing around with different font and color combinations to see how they work.

Woo spot illustrations

And by woo, I mean killllll meeeeeeeeeee. Once I started this project I quickly realized that I had forgotten how to use Illustrator. Well, not completely, but I am certainly rusty. Regardless, I like how they turned out. They are theoretically for an article entitled Family Matters, with the subtitles Your House and Your Money.

Are the concepts obvious? Yes. Do the illustrations work regardless? Also yes. Good enough for me.

Update? What's that?

I decided to do an independent study on digital portraiture this quarter and this is my favorite portrait so far (although it still needs some work). I've been improving with each portrait that I do, which was exactly what I was hoping would happen. I guess practice really does make perfect after all.

So I just rediscovered Dura-Lar...

Hopefully this means I'll have some new work to post by the end of the week!

glassblowing is awesome

I took a glassblowing class this quarter and this vase is by far the coolest thing I made. I have so much more respect for glass artists after taking this class, it's a very complicated process.

Annnnnd it's done

Here is the finished poster version. I'm pretty darn happy with it, but I might go in and make some tweaks on my own time over the summer.

Here is a sketch for a concert poster project that I'm working on.

This is only the main graphic, I have text planned out as well, and a snazzy background. Hopefully the end product will be rockin' and I'll post it as soon as it is done.

cameo

I made this cameo by sandblasting glass and masking layers with tape.  It was a fun experiment, and I really like how it turned out.

Trying to get good photos of this is really difficult because it's both clear and reflective.... oh well.

Coffee Conversation

Each coffee drink has it's own personality, haha. I'm not completely satisfied with how this turned out, I might do some work on the faces, or get rid of the background all together and turn it into a spot illustration. You know, with all that free time I have.

One of these things is not like the other

I had a lot of fun with this illustration, it kind of makes me want to do a series about a cat that thinks it's an owl :P

gladiators WIP

Done in Photoshop for a two color digital illustration project. I still need to do some cleaning up and fix the postion of the spear, but this has been a lot of fun to do. I had my roommates pose for reference, haha.

The dark side of power

An editorial illustration for one of my classes about the abuse of power in business. I want to do more with it, but I'm liking it so far. Nice and ominous.

"The Fool" tarot card

This style is a huge departure from the norm for me, but a lot of people seem to really like the aesthetic. I guess it's something I'll be playing around with in the future.

Dorian Gray (modernized!)

This is a cut paper piece that I did for my dimensional illustration class. We were supposed to interpret a piece of classic literature in modern times. This is a lot simpler than I originally intended, but I'm still happy with how it came out. I might work on it some more during spring break.

Hopping on the bandwagon

A lot of my fellow illustrator friends have blogs, so I guess it was only a matter of time before I made one too. The main purpose of this blog will be to show my sketches, work procces, and finished pieces, as well as some trite ramblings about the goings on in my life. Huzzah?
